Breaking Dawn Dilemma: What will it take for 2 films?

There has been nothing confirmed by Summit yet about 'Breaking Dawn', but Variety sheds some light on what may be the hold up on the go ahead:

The two-week $481 million worldwide gross of "New Moon" has vaulted Summit Entertainment into the big leagues, but it also has created a high-class challenge for toppers Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger.

They will likely have to cut a few big checks if they decided, as rumored, to split Stephenie Meyer's final "Twilight" novel, "Breaking Dawn," into two pictures. Sources said Summit has set Melissa Rosenberg -- who wrote the first three films -- to finish the series, but Summit has to clear several hurdles before Rosenberg learns how many more scripts she'll write.

One of those hurdles is figuring out whether "New Moon" director Chris Weitz will respond favorably to overtures from the film company and the cast to shoot two more films, back to back.

Summit execs would not comment, but multiple sources said the company wants to go the two-film route, which means reopening negotiations and securing approval from the author. It also means making new deals with a principal cast that is only locked up for four films. If "Breaking Dawn" becomes two pictures, all of the key cast members will get fat raises, and the three principals -- Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner -- could land paydays in the eight-figure range.

That's what happened with key cast members when Warner Bros. extended its blockbuster "Harry Potter" franchise by turning J.K. Rowling's last book, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," into two films that will be released in November 2010 and July 2011. The global success of the franchise made the paydays worthwhile.

While the solution to most of Summit's challenges will be determined by its willingness to open its wallet, the prospect of a Weitz return is more complicated.

After feeling violated by New Line's altering of his pic "The Golden Compass," Weitz said he felt redeemed and reinvigorated by the success of "New Moon." Yet, just before the film's release, Weitz was steadfast that he would next direct "The Gardener," a comparatively tiny film scripted by Eric Eason, with Paul Witt and Christian McLaughlin producing. At the time, he said Summit was in discussions to fund that film.

Summit hasn't closed a deal for "The Gardener," probably because the film company wants Weitz to postpone it and work on "Breaking Dawn" instead. Can Weitz resist the chance to finish a global franchise he helped build, even though it will mean more time away from his family for a long shoot? That's the question the helmer and his reps will weigh shortly. Though Summit hasn't officially made Weitz an offer, sources said the job is his if he wants it. After bringing in "New Moon" at around $50 million and keeping the cast happy, he's the logical choice.

I think it is obvious that I want 2 films, who doesn't? Anyone? No? Ok. I mean Summit has already made a shit load of money off this franchise...so they better shell out the dough for two films! Just sayin'...

Oh, and Chris, if you are reading this...PLEASE come back for Breaking Dawn!!!

New Still of Victoria From Cut 'New Moon' Scene

Remember back a few days when Chris Weitz revealed some details about the New Moon DVD extras? There was some talk of this scene with Victoria being included on the DVD:

"There will be probably about 20 minutes of deleted material," he explained, promising some meaty footage. "It really is good stuff and a bonus for the fans."

Among this bonus footage could be several moments MTV knows was shot but did not make the final "New Moon" cut, including:

» A scene with Rachelle Lefevre as Victoria driving to Forks in a car, snacking on a dead human. It was one of the final moments the actress filmed as the nomadic vampire.

Michael Sheen Talks About Working With Younger Cast on 'New Moon'

EW's Popwatch has a short interview with Volturi leader Michael Sheen:

Ashley spoke very highly of her time working with you.

She’s lovely. They all were very nice but they kind of treated me like an elderly uncle. They were all on their best behavior when they are around me. I just want to be down with the kids but that doesn’t really work out to well.

You have great command of the scene with the Volturi and you can tell that those other actors had great respect for you.

It helps coming into something where they all know each other and have already done one movie together. They’ve also been involved in the whole phenomenon together so I think they’ve bonded a lot. So when you’re coming in to do a big scene like the one we did in the film, it helps if the character you are playing is higher status than the other ones. At least it gives you a bit more confidence. So that certainly helped.

What do you think audiences are responding to with Twilight?

I think it’s a whole combination of things coming together. Especially for adolescent girls and also for older audiences, Stephenie [Meyer] takes the incredibly powerful experiences you have as a teenager and treats them absolutely fearlessly and gives them the respect they deserve. The first book and film are about the first time you fall in love. And New Moon is all about the first time your heart is broken. These are some of the most powerful experiences you can have in your life, regardless of your age. And there is a tendency to kind of trivialize those things as you get older, to kind of be patronizing about those things. And Stephenie treats them absolutely seriously. She also, very cleverly in a way, said that the vampires are stunningly gorgeous as a way to lure their prey. That’s very clever because in casting the film you have very beautiful people who are very good as well.

Melissa Rosenberg Talks About Harry Clearwater's Heart Attack

MTV talked with Melissa Rosenberg about making Victoria the cause of Harry Clearwater's heart attack in New Moon:

“In the book, Harry Clearwater’s death, heart attack is mentioned as something that’s off screen, although it plays a crucial role in the structure of the books,” said Melissa. “Reading that it was Harry Clearwater’s heart attack it just gave me the idea of, why don’t we see this? Stephenie [Meyer] doesn’t specify what caused the heart attack, so I decided, well, you know, if could be caused by something startling him. It could be caused by fear.”

As Melissa said, in the novel there is no explanation for Harry’s death, just how it worked as a plot point. By adding that it was a sighting of Victoria while he and Charlie were “hunting” for the wolf pack that set off the heart attack doesn’t violate Stephenie’s story, and instead adds a new dimension to that moment.

“It was a way to keep Victoria alive, it was a way to keep Charlie and the hunt alive, the danger to Charlie alive,” said Melissa, “and that’s where we get a really great action sequence with Victoria that all blends together with important parts of the movie and bring parts of the book forward. I particularly like that.”

I actually liked the little change, I think it was good for the movie! What did you think?

Jamie Campbell Bower Talks Caius & The Volturi

Entertainment Weekly's Popwatch chatted with Jamie Campbell Bower about playing Caius in New Moon:

Are you glad you got to play Caius?

I was originally auditioning for the role of Demetri in New Moon, and then they said, “We think you’d be more fitting as Caius.” And I said, “Well that’s very kind of you, I’d love to come along and play him.” And I was aware of the character, I was aware very much of the particularly strong presence the Volturi have in Breaking Dawn.

How did you prepare to play a Volturi?

The thing is it’s not like we’re going in blind to this job. There’s such history, particularly with the Volturi and the animosity they have toward werewolves. So to prepare for it I didn’t do anything particularly special, per se. Michael Sheen talks about having studied the characters that scared him for his character, but Stephenie [Meyer] also writes that Aro has a voice like feathers. It’s picking up things like that that can really help you. And once you get the costume and the makeup and the contact lenses in it all sort of falls into place anyway.
Have you signed on for the next two installments?
I didn’t do Eclipse, which they’ve finished, but I will hopefully be in Breaking Dawn – that’s where we get to really kick the s*** out of everything.

Who are you closest with on the cast?

Ashley [Greene] or Chris Heyerdahl who plays Marcus. He’s a lovely guy and we have very similar tastes in our comedy and what we like to watch and what we like to read. So we’re kindred spirits on set. But you know, I got along well with everyone.

Anything else we should know about Caius?

He’s doesn’t have any powers. He’s the only bloody Volturi who doesn’t have any powers. God knows why, I need to ask Stephenie that. Maybe he has the power to appear that he’s four centimeters to the left of wherever he is. That’s the power I’d like him to have.

Dakota Fanning Talks Playing the Evil Jane in 'New Moon'.

EW's Popwatch talked with Dakota Fanning about playing evil Volturi member Jane in New Moon:

Your character, the Volturi member Jane, is terrifying. Was it fun to play evil?

Yeah. It’s one of the first times that I’ve done that. And this is a character that really takes pleasure in causing people pain. And that’s kind of a fascinating character to get to play. So that was definitely one of the reasons that I wanted to do it.

Are people reacting to you differently now that they’ve seen you play a villain?

I guess people and fans of the series that have seen me in the movie will see me in a different way, but I think that’s what being an actor is. It’s getting to manipulate yourself to fit characters. I think your job is to be a blank canvas and take on your characters, so that’s what I love doing. And I love getting to play all different kinds of people. And, yeah, surprise people with my red eyes, I guess.
Those were creepy. Were they actual contacts?

They’re hand-painted contacts. I’ve never worn anything in my eyes before, so it was definitely a feeling I’d never experienced. But they have someone to put them in and take them out. You can kind of feel them. But you get used to it after a while.

Did they help you get in character?
Yeah, I think you automatically have kind of a creepy look to you no matter what you’re doing or saying, so it definitely helps.

5 Facts About Eclipse: War, Action, & The Love Triangle!

Rotten Tomatos has a great article with some facts about Eclipse straight from the cast members!

Fact #1: It's Darker
The brand new poster for Eclipse (above) hints at a darker tone with its brooding storm clouds. With 30 Days of Night director David Slade at the helm, it's unsurprising. "Every movie is different because we work with a different director on each one, which I love," Taylor Lautner tells RT. "David Slade is perfect for the third film because it's darker. Eclipse was my favourite book."

Ashley Greene, who plays vampire Alice, tells RT that Slade isn't just a prince of darkness. "David is actually hysterical," she laughs, "He has such a dry sense of humour that sometimes you don't know if he's kidding or not. Eclipse will be amazing because he has made it far edgier and more dramatic. It's going to look very cool."

Fact #2: There Will Be Less "Love Story" and More "War"
"Eclipse isn't as intimate as Twilight or New Moon," Robert Pattinson explains to us. "We're at war, so I get to interact with more characters, not just Kristen. You'll also find out more about the other members of the Cullen family. It just feels bigger." But -- fear not, Twihards -- that isn't to say the love story is cast aside altogether. "New Moon set up a love triangle with Bella, Edward and Jacob," says Lautner. "So we explore that further in Eclipse. It's a tough situation for all of them because Bella is torn between two guys, Jacob can't get the girl that he loves and then there's Edward, with all of his issues."

Fact #3: The Werewolves Will Crank Up the Sex Appeal
"We all know the appeal of the vampire family," says Nikki Reed, who plays vampire Rosalie. "But the werewolf boys are on a whole different level. They interact with a youthful, playful, comfortable warmth. It's very sexy."

As for Pattinson, he admits that his personal jealousy about Taylor Lautner's newly-ripped physique actually comes in handy for the role. "In Eclipse, Taylor and I have lots of scenes together where we have to be jealous and petty with each other," he says. "So it helps that I actually do feel inadequate when I see his body, especially because he's younger than me. He fulfills every criteria of what teenage girls want, physically, in a guy. I felt like a had to prove myself against him." [My Twilife: I can't wait for the banter between Edward & Jacob, that was one of my favorite things in Eclipse!]

Fact #4: There's More Action
"Filming Eclipse actually changed my life," says Nikki Reed of the arduous training regime the cast had to endure. "I have never been so fit -- this is the first time in my life I have actually had a bicep. It's bizarre to compare how we look now to how we all looked in the first movie. The entire cast turned up on set for Eclipse looking super-buff."
New cast member Bryce Dallas Howard tried to play a prank on the crew during one stunt, but she didn't count on Pattinson's awkwardness. "We had a fight scene where Bryce had to grab my hair," he laughs. "So she took a clump of hair from my stunt double's wig and was going to pretend she had pulled it from my head. She told me to scream and storm off set, but it was so embarrassing. She had this huge clump of hair in her hand, and I was like 'oww,' really unconvincingly."

While the rest of the cast were having fun with stunts, spare a thought for poor Taylor Lautner. "Eclipse is a lot more physical for my character," he explains, "but any time I have any kind of action, I'm a wolf, so it's all done with CGI. It's a bummer."

Fact #5: The Ending Will Be Nicely Set Up For a Fourth - And Perhaps Fifth - Film
There are four books in The Twilight Saga: Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn. But Ashley Greene gave RT the strongest indication yet that there might be five films. "We have finished filming Eclipse and one would assume that, if New Moon does as well as Twilight, then we'll start filming Breaking Dawn next year," she says.

"The only thing is, Breaking Dawn is a very large book so it would be a really long movie. We're thinking they might decide to split it into two parts, like they did with Harry Potter. Either way, we need to get on with shooting them because, unlike Harry Potter, vampires don't age. So we all need to look the same!"

NEW YORK – Hot off the tail of the New Moon premiere, this week’s Entertainment Weekly explores the phenomenon that is the Twilight series.Chris Weitz opens the door to his beach house looking like a wilted rose. He’s unshaven, pale and wearing clothes he appears to have found wadded in a ball on his bedroom floor. It’s exactly the way you’d expect to find the director the morning after his movie The Twilight Saga: The New Moon opened around the world to numbers no one thought possible. But Weitz isn’t recovering from a long night of revelry. He’s just exhausted. In the last ten days, he’s been in more time zones than the sun, on the last stretch of promotional duties for his movie. “I’m at the point of physical collapse,” says Weitz, 40. “Hopefully I will now lapse into obscurity. That’s my plan.”

We can think of 140 million reasons that’s not going to happen – all of them dollars. On opening weekend, New Moon made the kind of money usually reserved for comic-book heroes and boy wizards, breaking records for midnight screenings and Friday box office. More significantly, Weitz has made the highest grossing female-oriented movie since James Cameron opened Titanic in 1997. And, with Sandra Bullock scoring a career best opening with $34.5 million for The Blind Side, he’s taken part in one of the most female-driven weekends in history–one that should wake up whatever Hollywood executives still underestimate the spending power of the purse. Still, Weitz won’t make any grand claims for himself. “The degree of credit I can take is limited,” he says. “I’m just the glorified conductor.”

Kirsten Prout Talks 'Eclipse' & Her Role as Lucy

Pop Eater talked with Kirsten Prout, who will be playing Lucy in Eclipse, about her role in the film & got her to reveal as many details as she was allowed:

I actually wanted to ask you about the audition process. Did you go after this one? Did you get the call?

"I just got the call. I went for one of the other vampires, Bree, and the vampire Bree is supposed to be thirteen years old with very short brown hair. So physically I was absolutely wrong for the part. But I went in, and the casting director and the director liked me so much that they said, 'OK, you know what? We have another part.' So they fit me in through that audition, into Lucy, who is also a newborn vampire, and she actually is the one who turns Jasper, which is interesting. The thing about Lucy is that she has long blond hair and very very pale blue eyes and skin, so physically I was a big match for Lucy. I went in for one more audition for Lucy and I ended up showing up on set a few days later."

From what I recall, Lucy is described, but you don't actually see a lot of her...is that right?

"The thing is, if you read the book, it's done in a very different way. In the book, it's kind of a flashback. In the book she's more of a vampire who...she was just kind of part of turning Jasper, whereas in the movie, it's kind of featured, and it's actually a scene, and Lucy is a lot more prominent in turning Jasper, so it's a bit different. But I can't tell you much." [laughs]

Yeah, I'm sure that non-disclosure agreement was 'huge'!

"Oh my god! You should have seen it! My agent was like, 'Yay, you've got the part. You just have to come in and sign a couple things.' I went in and there was this stack on the desk that was bigger than my entire head! And I was like, 'Holy crap!'" [laughs]

Because the character is being done a bit differently than it was in the book, did you have any leeway to create the character? Everyone else has a pretty detailed character description.

"I think we've all played vampires differently. The way I think about it, everyone is so different. I think about how some people express their hunger, some people express love, some people express all there emotions, they have these certain characteristics that, when they're hungry or when they love something, their reaction to it is so different, so playing a vampire was interesting for me. Because who's the authority on what it's like to smell blood?"
